Berkhamsted Girls buzzing after spelling bee success

Two girls have represented Berkhamsted School at the regional finals of the Foreign Language Spelling Bee 2017.

Grace Botha and Anais Tate were challenged to learn a wide vocabulary and then recite the spellings as fast as possible using the alphabet of their chosen foreign language.  With over 9,000 contestants Grace’s outstanding performances placed her 3rd, and she earned a place at the National Finals in July.

The qualification began in September when each Year 7 class in Berkhamsted held a competition. Early in 2017 a whole school final identified the two pupils with the best vocabulary, spelling and memory skills to represent the school at the regionals.

Grace entered with high hopes. "At the beginning my aim was to reach the regional final, but I was surprised and delighted to emerge from the school competition as the winner along with Anais. There were several really talented linguists I was up against even within my class, so I always thought it would be hard to get through,” she said.

“I was nervous going into the regional finals, it’s the first time I’ve entered a competition like this. To prepare, I just kept going through words and trying to do it faster and faster while making sure I was getting the spelling correct every time.  I would do this in my head throughout the day, and out loud whenever I could.

“It was also really nice to practice with Anais, and we supported each other all the way.”

‘E-S-T-A-D-O-U-N-I-D-E-N-S-E’

“One of the longest words was ‘Estadounidense, it’s the Spanish word for the American. I practised this one a lot. Eh, es-eh, teh, ah, deh, oh, ooh, en-eh, ee, deh, eh, en-eh, es-eh, eh”

Grace has just been presented with a list of 200 Spanish words to learn for the final, which takes place in July at Anglia Ruskin University.

Remarkably, Grace goes into the final stage to compete against the best in the country having only started learning Spanish last year.  Her phenomenal progress is a great testament to her talent, dedication and to the support she’s had from staff at Westbrook Hay Preparatory School (Year 6) and Berkhamsted School (Year 7).

Renowned Chilterns painter Brian Bennett to exhibit at Berkhamsted School

Living in Berkhamsted for 60 years, half of the time as Head of Art at Berkhamsted School, Brian Bennett has established himself as one of the best-known living painters of the Chilterns.

To celebrate the year of his 90th birthday, 90 of his oil paintings capturing the essence of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be displayed at the School’s Chadwick Art and Design Centre.

Brian’s connection with Berkhamsted School spans over six decades. From his home, a stone’s throw away from Kings Campus and Chesham Road Playing Fields, where he refereed and helped train the School’s rugby teams, Brian continues to take great interest in school life.

Combining the seemingly contrasting skills of an oil painter and rugby player, Brian grew up with a love of sport and art. His versatile nature, along with his talent and skills, helped him secure his first teaching job at Plymouth College after graduating from Oxford University. Later he transferred to Berkhamsted, where he inspired many young artists to achieve their potential.

By exploring every inch of his favourite spots of the Chilterns, Brian has produced a spectacular series of paintings. Until recently, every painting was created on location. He would manage to haul a heavy box of paints, a canvas, an easel and a full day’s stock of refreshments to some of the most remote areas of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire along the escarpment of Chiltern Hills.

At any age, 90 or 19, oil painting is exhausting, complex and requires an enormous amount of concentration.  It is a great testament to Brian’s longevity, strength and passion for painting he is remarkably still maintaining the same standard of work.

The challenge painters face in the Chilterns is the ever-changing light conditions. Battling against the weather and the rapidly changing skies, one moment the scene will be beautifully lit up, the next a great shadow will descend on the whole landscape. Brian enjoys the variation of the English climate, with each season having its own appeal. His work includes snow-filled landscapes from the depths of winter, to the bright and colourful scenes of spring and summer.

While Brian is well known locally, and possibly the most acclaimed artist to have ever taught at Berkhamsted School, his list of national accolades speaks for itself:

  • President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1987 to 1995.
  • Governor of the Federation of British Artists 1990 to 1996.
  • Winner of the Stanley Grimm prize 1979, 1985 and 1992 at the R.O.I. annual exhibitions
  • Produced work for private collections in USA, Japan, Europe and the UK including HRH Prince Edward, HRH The Duchess of Gloucester and the Duchess of York.

A visit to Brian’s home studio revealed the creative process behind his famous work.

He said “I’ve always wanted to paint. I love exploring, and I look to find something that is meaningful and stimulating. I aim to reveal the world through painting and invite viewers to discover the poetry of the landscape.

“Curiously, I love painting grass, especially with the wild flowers growing in its midst, which usually means lying in the long grass to create an interesting composition. I also love painting water and the lovely Chiltern panoramas.

“I have developed my own style and technique from painting with a personally designed knife. It’s very flattering and reassuring when people go into a room and say ‘that’s a Brian Bennett’.”

Brian’s exhibition in the Chadwick Centre will be open to the public from Monday 28th August to Saturday 2nd September.  There will be around 90 oil paintings for sale, the vast majority depicting the stunning Chiltern landscapes.

People will often ask Brian how long it takes to create his paintings. And his answer will always be the same: “X hours and 60 odd years.”

His life experience, the decades he has spent exploring the Chilterns, the way he has refined and maintained his artistic skills at 90 years old are presented through his entire collection.  Each and every piece reveals the world through the eyes of Brian Bennett at 90.

Brian’s exhibition in the Chadwick Centre will be open to the public from Monday 28th August until Saturday 2nd September. There will be around 90 oil paintings for sale, most depicting the stunning Chiltern landscape.

Every Monday afternoon our senior school pupils attend various clubs and societies which are designed to expand their interests.

This week the ‘606 Soccer Punditry Club’ welcomed Malky Mackay, a parent at Berkhamsted School for a question and answer session.

During his playing career, Malky won three consecutive promotions to the Premier League between 2004 and 2006 with Norwich, West Ham and Watford. Before the move to England, Malky played for Queen’s Park and Celtic.

He won five caps for Scotland as a defender and told 606 Club the two opponents he most respected as a player were the strikers Jurgen Klinsmann and Raúl.

After retiring as a player in 2008, he became manager of Watford in June 2009. He then took charge of Cardiff City between June 2011 and December 2013, achieving promotion to the Premier League in 2013. Malky managed Wigan Athletic from November 2014 to April 2015 and is currently Performance Director for the Scottish Football Association.

We were most grateful for Malky for giving up his time to visit the School before heading into London for the League Manager’s Association annual dinner at the Savoy Hotel.

Four Berkhamsted pupils have competed in the Year 8 Foreign Language Translation Bee Regional Finals.

Finn Graham and Hugo Lindsey (French) and Millie Headley and Ela Chawla (Spanish) were required to translate sentences from English to a foreign language in three tenses.  In just 60 seconds, it was a race against the clock to deliver the challenging translations.

At the Regionals, they were already placed in the top 100 out of over 8,000 who originally entered. Millie Headley excelled herself to win the gold medal and will represent the School at Nationals in July.

MFL teacher Beth Leonard said “This is the first year Berkhamsted have fielded a team, and we are delighted with the pupils’ performances in Peterborough for the Year 8 MFL Translation Bee.

“It was a perfect opportunity for the pupils to live the school values including ‘aim high with integrity’ and ‘be adventurous.’ One parent reported their child really enjoyed the experience especially as it was their first opportunity to represent the school."

The Translation Bee is a national competition organised by Routes into Languages - a government-funded project to inspire students across the country to learn languages in schools, colleges and universities.

Earlier this year, Year 7 pupils took part in the equivalent competition for younger pupils– The Foreign Language Spelling Bee 2017.

500th Anniversary Time Capsule buried at Berkhamsted Prep.

A time capsule has been ceremonially buried at Berkhamsted Prep in a joint project with Berkhamsted Boys.

Children at Prep, aged 7 to 11, engaged with the School’s 475 year history while looking ahead to what the next generations of pupils would be excited to see in the time capsule.

The capsule, a gleaming box filled with present day artefacts, will be unearthed in 25 years for the School’s 500th anniversary.

While many Prep pupils pondered over where their academic journey and future life may take them, it was noted that Headteacher Mr Hornshaw would be celebrating his 70th birthday at the time of the un-burial!  In 25 years, all involved will no doubt be welcomed back as guests and Old Berkhamstedians.

Mr Hornshaw, Head teacher of the Prep School and Mr Thompson, Headteacher of Berkhamsted Boys said “We are delighted to rekindle the original connections in the school’s history between the Prep and Senior pupils.

“By gathering a collection of present day memorabilia, we are preserving aspects of the life of the two schools which will provide an interesting comparison with life in 2041 when the capsule will be unearthed to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Berkhamsted School.”

Earlier in the year, Pre-Prep teamed-up with Sixth Form to bury their own time capsule to be unearthed in 2041.

Holocaust survivor talks to Berkhamsted pupils

Report by Roland Maxted.

The school welcomed Rudi Oppenheimer as a guest speaker to Y9 in Centenary Theatre.

Rudi is a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp who recounted and illustrated his remarkable story to an attentive audience who asked some excellent questions.

In April 1945, the Oppenheimer children board the last train to leave Bergen-Belsen, to end their horrific ordeal under Nazi imprisonment. After travelling for 14 days they awoke on the train to find that the SS guards had gone; they recognised soldiers from the Russian army and realised they had been liberated.

Rudi spoke strongly and clearly for 90 minutes, an impressive feat for an 85 year old to remain on his feet for that length of time. The pupils found it an extremely worthwhile talk and are very likely to be the last generation privileged to listen to a Holocaust survivor live. Nick Townsend proposed the vote of thanks and joined Mr Oppenheimer for lunch, together with Charlotte Warne and Josh Grimsdale (pictured).

Thanks go to Rudi for giving up his time to visit Berkhamsted, and to the Holocaust Educational Trust for making it possible.

Chief Executive Karen Pollock MBE said “The Holocaust Educational Trust educates and engages students from across the UK, from all communities about the Holocaust and there can be no better way than through the first-hand testimony of a survivor.

“Rudi’s story is one of tremendous courage during horrific circumstances and by hearing his testimony, students will have the opportunity to learn where prejudice and racism can ultimately lead.

“At the Trust, we impart the history of the Holocaust to young people, to ensure that we honour the memory of those whose lives were lost and take forward the lessons taught by those who survived.”

A-level students at Berkhamsted School receiving their results today can be proud of their efforts within the classroom: this year group achieved more A* grades than any Berkhamsted year group before them. It was also the second highest number of A* and A grades and A* to B grades in the School’s history.

Over 30% of students gained at least one A* grade and 79 achieved ABB or better. Outstanding results were particularly evident in English Literature, Art & Photography, and modern foreign languages. Andrew Youngs was the top achiever with four A* grades in Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics.

“Berkhamsted students have worked hard and achieved excellent exam results,” said Richard Backhouse, the Principal, “and they have continued to achieve great things outside the classroom too – members of this year have debated for the national team, captained the England Independent Schools rugby team, and the England U19 Lacrosse team, achieved a remarkable number of Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards, grade 8 music exams, LAMDA certificates, and volunteered more than 2,500 hours for the community. They’ve been busy, ambitious, positive members of the school.”

Richard Petty, Head of Sixth, paid tribute to them: “This is a particularly pleasing set of results from a particularly talented year group when one considers the vast breadth of achievements realised by the students across and beyond the curriculum.

“There are individuals who have taken a play to the Edinburgh Fringe with 5* reviews; this was the third year group to undertake the Student Consultancy, advising local social enterprises in conjunction with Oxford University Careers Service; and it was this year group which formed the inaugural cohort of the Mini-MBA pioneered by Berkhamsted and Ashridge-Hult Business School. As I pass on to my successor Martin Walker, I am excited by the range of enrichment opportunities available to Berkhamsted students.”

Some examples of the breadth of involvement and talent among this year’s top A-level achievers at Berkhamsted School are highlighted below:
  • In addition to their significant leadership responsibilities, Charlie Nicholls, Head Boy and first team cricket captain for the past two years, achieved A*A*A* plus an A* for EPQ and Head Girl Nicole Walmsley attained A*AA and an A* for EPQ. Both will take up places at Durham.
  • Phoebe Jarvis, who joined in Year 12 from Beaconsfield High School on the prestigious Peter Gibbs Science Scholarship, achieved A*A*AA. Phoebe will study Natural Sciences at Cambridge.
  • Alex Burgar (A*A*A and A* for EPQ) and Alice Hart (A*A*AB and A* for EPQ) have both made exceptional contributions to the musical life of the school; both have secured offers of places at Oxford.
  • Tara Sallis (A*A*A and A* for EPQ) joined in Year 12 from Pipers Corner having never debated before and earlier this month was one of five students selected by the English Speaking Union to represent England at the World Schools Debating Championships in Bali. Her talent as a debater was spotted by her Politics teacher, Mr Greg Anker (read more here). Tara will study History at Oxford.

Harry's Heart documentary film launch

A documentary produced by  Harry's Heart Foundation will explore the story of Harry Faulkner.

On the 7th February 2013 Harry, a super-fit 18 year old squash player from Hertfordshire and student at Berkhamsted School, tragically died from a sudden cardiac arrest whilst competing in a tournament.

Unknown to everyone, Harry had an undiagnosed heart condition that kills 12 young people in the UK each and every week. This condition is broadly known as Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS).

Produced by one of Harry’s oldest friends Liam O’Sullivan, the film aims to raise awareness through an uplifting yet educational documentary.

Liam said “Harry’s Heart is my first film project and I’m grateful I’ve been able to work on something that means so much to me personally. I always wanted to be able to do something that makes a difference and supports a good cause. ”

Since Harry's devastating death, his family and friends have committed themselves to Harry's Heart Foundation, in order to make diagnosis and treatment more accessible, and to prevent further fatalities.

Harry's mother, Donna Faulkner, says: “This silent killer takes more than just a young life; it changes the lives of families forever.”  This silent killer takes more than just a young life; it changes the lives of families forever.

The hour-long documentary features interviews with Harry’s family and school friends, and reminds us of the promising future that lay ahead of him.

The film explore questions such as: Why was there such a lack of public awareness? Does current SDS research offer any solutions? Is ECG screening really so vitally important? We know that the tools now exist to manage the condition; death is not inevitable.

Documentary Launch

Please join us on Friday 15 September 2017 at 7pm in Centenary Theatre (Berkhamsted School Kings Campus, Kings Road, HP4 3BG) and show your support for this campaign that is so very close to the heart of our school community:  in recent years this silent killer has not only taken the life of Harry but also OB Alex Hubbard, who died suddenly in December 2014 at the age of 21.

Tickets cost £5 and money raised will go towards continuing to raise awareness of SDS and supporting the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young, which provides a vital heart screening service for young people.

Berkhamsted Girls School have created a seventh house, paving the way for 41 pupils from Year 7 to Year 11 to take up residency from September.

Named after Marjory Stephenson, MBE, FRS (1885-1948), Stephenson House pays tribute to the first Berkhamsted Girl to study at Cambridge University, where she read natural sciences.  Marjory combated attitudes of the time to women in higher education and completed her degree before establishing herself as a renowned biochemist and researcher. She became one of the first women to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Full House and home improvements

The Senior School house system provides pastoral support and academic guidance for every pupil Made up of pupils from different year groups, the Houses are the centre of pupils' lives, giving a sense of belonging and encouraging self-confidence.

The expansion will reduce the number of girls in each house and in turn build upon the excellent support available for all pupils from Year 7 to 11.

Similarly, Berkhamsted Boys benefits from a supportive and friendly pastoral system among pupils and staff in each of the eight houses.

Personnel and practicalities

Mrs Alison Murray, has been appointed as Head of Stephenson House in addition to her role as Geography teacher.  Mrs Murray will be supported by Deputy Head of House Mrs Julie Neill, and five House Tutors.

Emma Savage is appointment as House Captain and the Deputy House Captains are Isabelle Warburton and Anastasia Fage in Year 11.

Mrs Murray said “I am delighted to have the opportunity to establish a new House at Kings. Marjory Stephenson embodied the School’s values and will be a great inspiration to the girls in the House.”

The new House Room will be in the space currently used by Sixth Form pupils to work and relax when they are at the Kings Campus.  The rooms will be converted and equipped throughout the Summer holidays. An alternative room will be made available at Kings Campus for Sixth Form students.

Former pupil Suzie Imber wins BBC astronaut series

While many school children may dream of becoming an astronaut, Dr Suzie Imber, a former Berkhamsted pupil, has taken a giant leap towards perhaps the most demanding career in the universe.

Having battled a series of gruelling physical, psychological and intellectual tests against 12 exceptional candidates, Suzie was named the winner of Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?

Dr Imber will now receive a recommendation to join the European Space Agency.

Joining Berkhamsted in 1990, Suzie had shown a keen interest in Space from a young age. During her 11 years at the School her achievements included a Lacrosse National title 2000 together with teammate Jo Vila (now our Director of Sport).

Dr Imber said: “I think that performing at a national level in multiple sports, combined with a PhD and a decade of research experience, allowed me to perform consistently well throughout the programme.  This type of selection process requires physical and emotional resilience, as well as testing both intellectual capacity and natural ability over a broad range of skill sets.

“I really enjoyed being part of the process, it was an incredible experience for me and I will definitely be applying for the next ESA astronaut selection round, but for now I’m really looking forward to getting back to training, and doing some research. I’m also looking forward to taking part in more public outreach events because I’ve realised how important it is for us to inspire the next generation of people who want to go and become scientists and part of that is sharing our experiences and encouraging people to go and study science.”

Berkhamsted Girls Headteacher Liz Richardson said “She was a pupil who relished challenges inside the classroom and in her extra-curricular activities. Her determination is reflected by many of her achievements at School and her education and career thereafter.” Mrs Richardson had taught Suzie English during Sixth Form.

Dr Steve Redman, Head of Physics said “The BBC Two series has captured the imagination of millions of viewers across the nation and Suzie, and being  Old Berkhamstedian will be a great inspiration to our pupils.

“We anticipate Year 8s Space Day to have an extra buzz of excitement during Extended Curricular Week.”
